It is said that in the last period of his life, Bob Marley became a member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. And that to become a member, one must denounce Selassie I as God. And the fact that his funeral was hold in and by this church, shows that he truly was a member. Bishop Yesehaq from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is said to describe Bob's conversion as one whole hour of weeping sobbing and tears of repentance.

So: did Bob Marley really repent from believing and teaching that rastafari is God, and became a christian (just like Judy Mowatt), or is this just christian wishfull thinking (just like some christians claim that Darwin took everything back and accepted Christ before he died)?

I believe there is a description of this on he LOZ FAQ page. I also know that Judy wasn't really happy about it, but she because a Christian too.

Kind of cool. Just think, go Home, and see Bob Marley playing reggae with the angels before God. I don't have a clue what it will be like, but that would be pretty darned cool!

Just the thought of all the people we are going to see there who are famous or were famous on Earth, and to think that won't matter! The only thing that will matter is being before God. WITHOUT SIN. Come Jesus come!

It is a fact that he was baptized "Berhane Selassie" and received into the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and that his state funeral was a rite of the EOC. (You can see film footage of his EOC funeral in biographical movies, like Bob Marley & the Wailers: the Bob Marley Story and Rebel Music: the Bob Marley Story.) Did he renounce any belief that H.I.M. Selassie is God? He must have made a sufficient public profession of Christian faith to convince the EOC to baptize and receive him; they would not have done it otherwise.

I cannot say if his profession of Christian faith was matched by interior conversion of heart, but I would assume it was. Bob Marley was no hypocrite. If he did not really believe in his heart what he professed, I do not believe he would have professed it.

What did Marley's conversion to the EOC mean to him? Unfortunately, he did not live long enough to really tell us. But maybe someday we will find out?

I did read it somewhere, and I think that his mother did ask him to join the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. His move to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church seemd to have caused some trouble at his funeral.

The EOC, like all the Christian churches with ancient roots, has and celebrates its own particular Christian funeral rites, and the Marley family worked to insure no one else would do Bob's rites. But although Marley became an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian before his death, Rasta groups like the Twelve Tribes were apparently annoyed that they were not given "equal time." At least one Twelve Tribesman interrupted the funeral to speak.

I don't know the extent of the interruption because I have only seen portions of the funeral footage, and that was not included.
